The Queen Anne’s Revenge
Blackbeard commandeered a ship with a name almost as famous as his own. This ship called The Queen Anne’s Revenge could have been seen in the early 1700’s along much of the eastern coast waters. Blackbeard spent most of his time on this ship in North Carolina waters. The Queen Anne was a large ship with an arsenal of weapons. A ship made for a captain like Edward Teach was massive and overwhelming in the face of the enemy. |
Queen Anne’s End
While traveling through what was then called Topsail Inlet Blackbeard deliberately ran the Queen Anne onto a sandbar getting it stuck and making it unable to travel further.(Lee, 1984) The Queen Anne seemed doomed and Blackbeard commissioned an enemy to help salvage his ship. The scheme behind it all was to sink this enemy’s boat as well. These two shipwrecks made it impossible to move either ship. The Topsail Inlet where this was took place is now called the Beaufort Inlet near Cape Lookout. The Queen Anne was discovered in this Inlet in 1996 of the cost of Beaufort, NC. She lay in shallow waters about 20 feet deep, her remains covered in a fine layer of silt and scattered about 150 feet cannons, the ship’s bell, anchors, wine bottles, tablecloths, many guns and even a syringe.(Karg, 2007) There have been very few things removed from the Queen Anne since its discovery. The items brought to the surface have been strictly for use in identifying the ship as the Queen Anne. There have been 18 cannons, wine bottles, guns, anchors and a ship bell. This map shows where the remains of the Queen Anne were discovered of the North Carolina coast.

Although discovered in 1996 the Queen Anne’s Revenge took much research to prove its authenticity. In the year 2011, after 15 years of uncertainty, the shipwreck off the coast of North Carolina was confirmed as that of the infamous 18th-century pirate Blackbeard. The Queen Anne's Revenge grounded on a sandbar near the North Carolina coastline in 1718, nine years after the town had been established. Blackbeard and his crew abandoned the ship and survived. This shipwreck had been thought to be The Queen Anne for years. Scientist proved its validity by using common sense and deductive reasoning. It is stated that the ship’s sheer massive size and arsenal of weapons prove it could only be the Queen Anne(“Blackbeard’s Ship Confirmed off North Carolina,” n.d.). If Blackbeard survived the sinking of his famous ship, what led Blackbeard to this end?
