Mary Read
Mary Read lived a normal life as an English girl until her brother died of an unfortunate illness at a young age. At this time her mother began to dress Mary as a boy in attempt to fill the void in her own broken heart. Dressing as a male continued into her years as a young woman.. As an adult she bonded her breasts and portrayed herself as a man, to join the militia. She eventually fell in love and married, but her husband passed away from illness. Read’s husband’s death left her life empty. With the emptiness left from her husband’s death Read abandoned life on land and escaped to the sea.
