Why North Carolina
North Carolina was a refuge for these pirates. The state government invited them onto North Carolina shores with their boats full of treasures. The Governor, judges and local officials were happy with the revenue this activity brought to the state. Pirates did not necessarily have what we consider a home. They lived on the sea, but when they wanted to rest on land and feel safe they docked on North Carolina shores. Much of the pirate’s activity seemed to control the way the laws were made, used and changed to benefit the pirates and officials during the golden age of piracy. Pirates gave bribes of gold, spices and sugar to get away with acts of treachery. Pirates were very resourceful. They were also a head of their time. Pirates robbed and pillaged off the shores of North Carolina in the Atlantic Ocean. This pillaging forced people to create new trade routes and helped build our trade routes used for importing and exporting goods today. Eventually welcoming women to join their crews was very socially forward thinking. These women proved with action that they were just as fierce as their male crew mates and the citizens of coastal towns knew it. Many years’ later women still were suffering equality in our society. Women pirates broke a barrier years before woman had equal rights in our country. Pirates had their hands in politics and law making throughout history. They helped forge their own path with less than honorable methods, but made our coastal history rich and full of adventurous factual tales of remarkable characters. |
